Functions & Responsibilities:

• In a team environment within RTS and the Design/Engineering team, the Senior Mechanical Engineer makes necessary calculations using engineering principles to design and develop equipment.
• Performs manual and electronic 3D/2D/CAD drafting functions to generate, update, improve and revise design drawings.
• Responsible for project budget recommendations and performance.
• Designs or supervises design and development of equipment to implement practical test models for evaluation of actual use in industry.
• Performs research and development, assigns and coordinates designers, detailers, machine shop technicians and/or consultants to demonstrate feasibility of concepts.
• Coordinates the construction and testing of experimental fixtures and prototype mechanical mechanisms in both laboratory and field settings.
• Works with all types and phases of manufacturing to produce automated machinery.
• Works with Research Engineering and Design to identify quality and manufacturability issues with new and current machine designs.
• Makes recommendations on design changes for economics, performance, and quality enhancement and production issues. Participates in and influences quality control programs for all products.
• Travels to technical, trade and profession conferences.
• Consults with associated professionals on select research activities.
• Works with patent attorneys as required.
• Responsible for implementing and carrying out Equal Employment and Affirmative Action in his/her unit.
• Assists in the selection, training and supervision of team employees.

Contacts with Others:

Works closely with Research Engineering: project engineers, technicians and persons. Frequent contact with production, manufacturing and field service departments. Outside frequent contacts include packinghouse personnel, vendors, research organizations, consultants, university research personnel and government agencies. Periodically works with patent attorneys.

Education Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering or Equivalent Design Experience.

Experience Requirements:

• The qualified applicant must be a self-starter and have 5 years work experience with engineering principles, automation, materials handling equipment or related machine design.
• The applicant must have demonstrated the ability to work concurrently on several projects, establish project goals and complete activities with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated innovation and creativity is necessary.
• Inventor/Product Data Stream CAD proficiency is required.
• AUTOCAD experience is desirable.
• Knowledge of shop techniques and production methods is desirable.
• Awareness of the food industry and familiarity with food processing/handling operations is a plus.
• Cost or production analysis experience is not necessary but would be beneficial.
• Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Some domestic and international travel is required.
